Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse Viewpoint
The Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse Viewpoint stands at Ponta da Vigia, on Madeira’s far western edge. Set high above the Atlantic, it combines a historic lighthouse, sheer coastal cliffs and wide ocean views in one of the island’s most exposed and memorable settings.
History and character
The lighthouse was built to improve navigation around Madeira’s dangerous western coast and began operating in June 1922. Its white building and red lantern remain a defining landmark of Ponta da Vigia. The lighthouse tower is about 14 metres high, while its position on the cliff gives the light a much greater elevation above sea level. Over the decades, the site has remained both a working maritime landmark and a popular place to understand the scale of Madeira’s Atlantic coastline.

Practical tip
The clifftop is exposed to strong wind and weather can change quickly, so bring a warm layer even on a sunny day. Stay behind barriers and well away from cliff edges. Visit late in the afternoon for softer light, but allow time to return before dark because the west coast is a long drive from Funchal.
