Traditional Santana Houses
The Traditional Santana Houses, known locally as Casas de Santana, are one of Madeira’s best-known cultural symbols. Their steep triangular shape, thick thatched roofs and colourful painted details make them an immediately recognisable part of the island’s heritage.
History and character
These small rural houses were designed for Madeira’s wet north-coast climate. The steep roof helped rain run off quickly, while locally available wood and thatch provided practical shelter. The preserved and reconstructed houses in the Núcleo de Casas Típicas de Santana show how this traditional architecture looked and functioned.
