Cristo Rei Viewpoint
Cristo Rei, meaning “Christ the King”, is one of Madeira’s best-known monuments. It stands on the clifftop at Ponta do Garajau, in Caniço, east of Funchal, with Christ facing the Atlantic Ocean and holding his arms open. The monument is also known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue because it was built in honour of Sagrado Coração de Jesus.
History and character
Cristo Rei was inaugurated on 30 October 1927, the same day that the road from Cancela to the monument officially opened. It was completed before the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated in 1931, making Cristo Rei one of the earliest major monuments to show Christ with open arms. Aires de Ornelas, son of the last majorat of Caniço, financed and commissioned the work. The design is credited to French sculptor Georges Serraz, while historical accounts also associate French sculptor Pierre Charles Lenoir with the project. The approximately 14-metre monument is an example of Art Deco sculpture, with simple forms, a strong vertical silhouette and a monumental presence above the sea. It was built as a public expression of Catholic faith, devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, peace and spiritual protection.

Practical tip
Visit in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and clearer views. The clifftop can be windy, so bring a light layer. Combine the viewpoint with Praia do Garajau, but check cable-car operating times and sea conditions before swimming.
