+ Add to trip plan

Machico Beach, also known as Praia da Banda Além, is a sheltered beach in Machico Bay on Madeira’s east coast. Its golden sand, breakwaters and central location make it one of the island’s most convenient places for a beach stop and a swim.

History and character

Machico Bay has an important place in Madeira’s history because it is associated with the arrival of Portuguese navigators in 1419. The modern beach was created as part of Machico’s waterfront development, using imported golden sand and protective breakwaters to provide a calmer bathing area than many open Atlantic beaches.

Why visit

  • Golden-sand beach in the sheltered Machico Bay
  • Breakwaters that usually create calmer water for swimming
  • Promenade, cafés, restaurants and town facilities nearby
  • A practical stop close to Machico centre and the east coast
  • Public parking destination set to the parking area beside the beach

Practical tip

Use the mapped Public Parking destination beside the beach. Check flags and sea conditions before swimming, especially when swell is forecast. In warm weekends and holidays, arrive earlier for easier parking and more space on the sand.
