Pico Grande
Pico Grande is one of Madeira’s most striking central-mountain summits. Rising to about 1,654 metres, it stands above the deep valleys around Curral das Freiras and offers a rugged high-mountain experience with volcanic rock, steep slopes and broad views across the island’s interior.
History and character
Pico Grande is reached by mountain paths that connect with the historic Caminho Real da Encumeada, known as PR12. These old mountain routes were used long before modern roads provided easier links between communities. Today, hikers commonly approach the summit from the Boca da Corrida area, following part of PR12 before taking the steeper path towards Pico Grande. The mountain sits within Madeira’s central massif, where volcanic geology, steep relief and changing weather have shaped both the landscape and the character of the walk.

Practical tip
Check the official status of PR12 and the mountain forecast before setting out, as access can change after rain, rockfall or maintenance. Use hiking boots with good grip, carry water, food, warm and waterproof layers, and start early. The final climb is steep and exposed in places, so do not attempt it in poor visibility, strong wind or without sufficient mountain experience.
